Review & Description

I AM EMBLA and EMILY’S FILES by Lee Adal are novels in the historical thriller series TIME OF THE SWORDS.

Mitch's attempt to fulfill his father's dying request turns into an exploration of hidden histories. The lost chronicles of the northern tier of the Eurasian continent and his personal history collide. The consequences of his search will lead to a conclusion that propels Mitch Seebeck too close to voyeuristic glimpses into the past, too close to long held taboos, and too close to home.

"The novels are goundbreaking, eye-openers. They are sexy, intriguing, full of action, and not for the faint of heart. Adal provides information that will challenge all you know about the past."

--Charles Frey Hightower

Lee Adal selected the series title, Time of the Swords, because early northern Europeans believed they lived within a period in time by that name. According to their chronicles, you and I also live in the same era.

Completed novels in the series, Time of the Swords:

I AM EMBLA -- Action-packed early, northern European saga is wrapped around the story of Embla and Peur. This historical thriller is a story about a young tribal counselor, Embla, and her relationship with a captured Roman thrall, Puer, who is returned to the north.

AEMELIA: The Illumination
In pre-plague Europe, a young woman who poses as a boy brings her curiosity and knowledge of ancient Sibbe traditions to an abbey and its scriptorium.

EMILY'S FILES
Post-modern action adventure about a family who faces the consequences from a lack of knowledge about their history and ancestry.

Excerpt from The Emily Files©:

"The night was cold. The hands on the wall clock moved slowly. At 4 AM, clouds moved over the lake and the night darkened. Somewhere, way off in the distance, a dog barked. Grram’s ears went up and he growled.

He startled Kira out of her sleep. Her heart pounded. She looked through a tiny opening in the blinds. “Mitch, wake up. I see movement down by the dock.”

Review & Description

Grave robbers looking for jewels while breaking into 19th century mausoleums in a 200-year-old cemetery stumble onto the remains of a body that shouldn’t be there: a teenaged girl. They take off, leaving the door to the mausoleum open.

The cemetery night watchman finds the body and calls the police who in turn call Del Coltrane, the 33-year-old funeral director of Henderson’s Funeral Home.

Although Del isn’t used to murder, he’s used to death, so initially this is just another corpse. But after the victim is identified as a local teen long thought to be a runaway, Del is pulled into the case as a favor to the tough-as-nails 15-year-old niece of the dead girl.

Del quickly realizes that the niece is the only member of the victim’s family who seems to care that her body has been found and that she was murdered. Even the local police don’t give the case top priority because years ago the victim had a reputation as a druggie who hung with a bad crowd.

Del also relates to the niece’s sense of grief because he too lost someone when he was about the same age: his high school girlfriend, also thought to be a runaway.

As this unlikely pair tries to piece things together, they arrive at the horrifying conclusion that the same person may have been responsible for a series of disappearances spanning 20 years in what everyone thought was a tranquil place to live.

Review & Description

What political impact do illegal aliens have in the U.S.? Can they really influence how our government works even through they can’t vote? What if a political organization found a way to use them as pawns?
In his new book A Dubious Terrain, Mr. Kubicki explores many of the issues surrounding the Illegal immigrant phenomena in the United States today.
Considering the huge illegal population, the state of the economy, the staggering cost of protecting ourselves, ties to the drug trade, and the long term concerns about changes to our culture, it is only a matter of time before some fringe group will react.
In the fourth installment of the Dubious Mystery series, the Nazi’s are back and this time they mean business. Colton Banyon must stop an insidious plot to dissolve our national freedoms. He and his band of unique sidekicks are after three artifacts that have been taken from security facilities by someone in the government. The multiple plots are connected to illegal immigrants, drug dealers, politicians, Homeland Security, a Nazi organization, and the fight game in Las Vegas. Even the Mayor of Las Vegas is involved in a plot.
Only this time something has gone very wrong. Banyon must drop everything and come to the aid of Wolf, his secret mentor. The threat has gotten very personal for him. In the balance is the future of political choices for our country and also Banyon’s ability to talk to Wolf. A choice must be made.
He discovers a string of seemly unrelated incidents that will come together on the streets of Las Vegas. If he doesn’t stop the events many will die and American Politics will be changed forever.
Everything is controlled by a modern day Nazi organization called the Effort. Banyon finds out the organization is much bigger and stronger than anyone imagined. But, can he stop them or will he lose everything by trying.

LEGACY (An Emily Taylor Mystery - Book 3)

Not all legacies are good ones…

While Emily Taylor deals with the dysfunctional Sanderson family at school, seemingly unconnected characters play out their own troubled journeys into the past.

Doro searches for her lost childhood. Alain Reneaux delves into the reasons behind his violent nightmares. The town's new lawyer, Jacob Finch, suffers from guilt about the heartbreaking death of his wife. And two lonely little girls suffer neglect and tragedy.

As Emily untangles the complexities of the Sanderson children’s lives, the collision of past into future causes an inferno of insanity and death, which ultimately proves how essential family and friendship are to happiness and endurance.

Editorial Reviews:

"Once in a while a mystery novel comes along that really lives up to its name. Legacy leaves us wanting to read more from its beautifully written opening to its clever closing chapters. A fascinating look at how four lives can collide." —D.J. McIntosh, author of The Witch of Babylon (CNN's pick as one of six enduring historical thrillers)

"The central image of Catherine Astolfo's "Legacy" is a wishing well, an ironic reminder of the old saying "Be careful what you wish for." In this powerful novel, characters who wish to dominate others spiritually end up creating victims not disciples. Astolfo's searing exploration of the anguish caused by egotism is counterbalanced by her characters' ultimate realization that friendship and community can overcome evil. In "Legacy", Astolfo gives readers an enduring theme wrapped in a gripping narrative." —Gail Bowen, author of the Joanne Kilbourn Mysteries

"In Legacy, Catherine Astolfo poses searching questions about the consequences of childhood trauma. Through the interwoven lives of her small-town characters, she explores not only the corrosive effects of abuse, neglect, and loss but also the healing that comes from facing the darkness." —Kay Stewart, author of Sitting Lady Sutra

"Description, dialogue, plotting, all developed with the skill of a seasoned mystery writer…Your writing is consistently strong and invigorating. It solidified my feeling that you are a writer in for the long haul and should mature into a mystery author of the top rank in Canada." —Don Graves, The Hamilton Spectator

Review & Description

In the summer of 1966, Richard Franklin Speck, a twenty-two year old Ordinary Seaman, waiting for a berth aboard a merchant ship, murdered eight student nurses inside a townhouse in South Chicago, shocking the surrounding hardworking, religious community to its very core.

Twenty years later, Carly Rocket and her business partner, Mike Holtzer, find themselves inside Stateville Correctional Facility hired to cast extras for a Hollywood movie. Unbeknownst to her, Speck is one of Stateville’s inmates. His infamous murders took place only blocks from her childhood home leaving her with deep emotional wounds. Discovering that Speck is enjoying his life behind bars, Carly is outraged and conspires with a guard to make a video tape of Speck’s uninhibited life in an attempt to change prison regulations. But it backfires, and suddenly Carly finds herself in danger of becoming Speck’s ninth victim.

Review:

Trusting Evil is a very different kind of suspense novel, a true original, revolving around the heinous crimes of one Richard Speck who tortured, raped and murdered 8 student nurses on July 14, 1966, in Chicago. Speck had Born to Raise Hell tattoed on his arm. All of that is true. Every word. And what is fictional in the novel rings true as well. This is a heartfelt, inspired novel written by Mary Leo, who lived in that time, very near to where it all happened.

Carly Rockett was a young girl, in love with Ringo Star and living the normal life of a teenager when the crimes occurred, and changed her life forever. She is haunted by the brutal murders throughout the rest of her childhood and into adulthood. She is traumatized by what she perceives as her own part in what happened. Only whiskey can fog the horrid memories, and not even then. She is obsessed by Richard Speck. Her life is spiralling downword fast. Carly works in the movie business, and one day finds herself filming a movie inside the very prison where Richard Franklin Speck, in all his ugliness, lives quite happily. Leo portrays with a chilling vividness scenes that make you want to look away, though you cannot.

The prose is fast moving, and as spare as Hemingway’s. The dialogue brilliant, the descriptions and sensory details, always just enough to pull the reader into the story and hold them fast until the last word. It’s more than that, though. It’s also a love story. I promise you, you won’t be able to put Trusting Evil down, and, like Carly, you’ll be haunted by this gripping story long after you’ve read the last word.

Highly recommended.

Spencer Grant had no idea what drew him to the bar with the red door. He thought he would just sit down, have a slow beer or two, and talk to a stranger. He is in love with a woman he knows next to nothing about. And he is hiding from a past he can't fully remember. On his trail is a shadowy security agency that answers to no one--including the U.S. government—and a man who considers himself a compassionate Angel of Death. Review & Description

In the third installment of the series, Colton Banyon is told to go to sleep. Wolf, his secret mentor and a spirit that he can talk to, tells him that he will narrate an unusual story about a Black Diamond. It is no ordinary diamond. It arrived on earth thousands of years ago and has the power to transfer energy to people. It can both give them super powers and also destroy them. It is both good and evil. Wolf tells Banyon that the Black Diamond has been stolen from a secure government facility and he must find it before it is too late. The story is the background that Banyon will need to understand the Black Diamond. Set in the early nineteen hundreds, the hero, Professor Adam Wesley discovers the history of the Black Diamond and sets off on it’s trail in hopes of securing the diamond. He realizes it is too powerful for anyone, but there are many people that want it’s power. For more than forty years he tracks the Black Diamond and discovers and meets a variety of historical people who have touched the diamond along the way, they all were affected. The real question becomes how has he been affected.

Review & Description

"There was a time...long ago, when whole nations, entire races of people, pinned their hopes and futures on individual warriors. Whole wars were won and lost on the outcome of a single battle between heroes. Entire countries were moved. Empires rose and fell..."

In Blue Fall, that time has come again.

A routine investigation throws a hapless insurance agent down the rabbit hole, into a world where the rich and powerful place wagers on the greatest game on earth. They call it the Tournament. It offers competition without limits. It is beholden to no man, and constrained by no law, and it is extremely dangerous. But where does the true power lie in this World Cup of warfare? With those who place the bets, or with the deadly players themselves? And can one man expose the secret before they find him?
