The first person, disturbed, psychotic killer rhymes to himself. Because it makes him smile. When taking out the trash and disposing of his victims, this main character of the book mutters. "Four rocks, not three or even five, but four rocks. Four is a perfect number." I suppose that he's pretty well convinced that four rocks will do the trick to weigh down the body that he floats out into the ocean inside a plastic bag. The trash. It sinks down into the teal, crystal clear waters and disappears beneath the surface.  If you enjoy "A Home With No Roof," go back to the beginning of it all with Detective Mathias in the first novel of the series, "Sunset over the Hermes."

About the Story: A LITTLE JOURNEY (August 1951) marks Bradbury’s final contribution to the editorial decade of Horace Gold, the editor of GALAXY magazine. Like THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES and THE FIREMAN, the story demonstrates Bradbury’s characteristic blending so early in his career of the sentimental and the transcendent, the homely and the mystical. Bradbury’s old women in space and their strange outcome are reminiscent of his more famous story KALEIDOSCOPE (published in THE ILLUSTRATED MAN) and its conclusion shows unusual if understated power. Bradbury’s THE FIREMAN (the short-form version of FAHRENHEIT 451 which was doubled in length for its book publication in 1953) appeared in the February 1951 issue of GALAXY and further solidified GALAXY’s reputation, as a magazine of unprecedented originality and ambition. Gold’s commitment to the highly ambitious THE FIREMAN was, then, courageous for its time and gave publicity to the editor’s insistence that GALAXY was an entirely new kind of science fiction magazine, one which was far more oriented toward style and controversial social extrapolation than the other markets ever had been. Although THE FIREMAN and THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES had been published earlier to significant attention, Bradbury in 1951 was by no means a writer of substantial reputation and his work was regarded by most science fiction editors and readers as marginal to the genre.

About the Author: Ray Douglas Bradbury (b. 1920) entered science fiction as a teenage Los Angeles fan frantic to sell John W. Campbell and become a major science fiction writer; although he eventually sold Campbell two very short stories in the early ’40s, his career took a different direction, first through the second- and third-level science fiction magazines (PLANET, STARTLING STORIES) and then to the literary quarterlies and women’s magazines (HARPER’S BAZAAR, CHARM) where his distinctive stylistic elegance led him to the Best American Short Stories and O. Henry Prize anthologies. He was regarded with the somewhat similar lyrical short story writer Truman Capote as among the most promising of the emerging generation. With THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES he became famous both inside and outside science fiction; subsequent collections (THE ILLUSTRATED MAN, DANDELION WINE) advanced his reputation. He wrote the screenplay for John Huston’s film adaptation of MOBY DICK (1953), and in the decades to follow hundreds of short stories and novels (A MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY), which cemented his reputation. He was awarded a Medal in Literature by George W. Bush in 2004.

In the sex scenes, which are sizzling by the way, I always feel that when reading this genre (which is my favorite) it is best to make the reader feel more than what is obvious, make it have that extra kick and you do it so well. In The Lollipop, the Halland family has been lucky, the family (AJ and Tess) are car dealers taking a break from that business. Now running a home based business and have become bored with it. AJ seeks a new challenge, a new doomed auto business venture.

His vivacious wife of twenty-five years is also bored even though they have a raucous sex life and seeks her own new adventures. A swinging lifestyle on her birthday soon opens their marriage to multiple sex partners.

Both are soon seduced by the lifestyle as Tess befriends several exotic bi-sexual dancers pulling her into the dark world of sex for money and the strip club business. AJ Halland the husband has other ideas, now that his new car business has failed. Why be a stripper when you can own the club. Gus Lawson is a oddball who fits in no where, a mystery man who stalks the strip clubs of a small Midwest town. Wherever he goes stripper are found dead. Now a new guy is taking over his favorite stalking ground and Lawson finds his wife appealing and now Lawson wants both the club and the hot wife, and will do whatever it takes. He knows he can dispose of the wife later at any time her freshness fades.

In Washington an old lover of AJ's from the late 70's, is now married to a powerful senator with three daughter. Victoria Markland's life will change forever, when one of her daughters die's while in the dark world of stripping.

The FBI is called in to put a lid on the senator’s problem, at the expense of finding the daughter's killer if in fact she did not overdose by her own hand.

Now the lives of all these characters will converge in a small Midwest town in this explosive erotic thriller. Can AJ find the real reason his girls are turning up dead as he and Tess delve deeper into this dark seedy world. It turns into a life and death race to find the killer and save his own wife. Will his years of addiction finally catch up before he can? Tess and AJ play right into Lawson's hand as more women die.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Joe Perrone Jr. worked as a sportswriter for the Passaic-Clifton, NJ, Herald News, and was also a freelance advertising copywriter. He is best known for his Matt Davis Mystery Series, which presently includes: "As the Twig is Bent," "Opening Day," and "Twice Bitten." In addition to his mysteries, Joe also authored "Escaping Innocence (A Story of Awakening)," an evocative coming-of-age novel set in the turbulent '60s. A non-fiction book, "A 'Real' Man's Guide to Divorce (First, you bend over and...)" was published in 2009.
Joe was a professional fly-fishing guide for ten years in the Catskill Mountains of New York, and has had several fly-fishing short stories published in the Mid Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide. "Opening Day" and "Twice Bitten," are both set in Roscoe, NY, the Upstate New York fishing village where Joe was a guide. "As The Twig Is Bent" was recently translated into Portuguese by Rafa Lombardino of Word Awareness, Inc of Santee, CA, and is currently available in Kindle and paperback.
Mr. Perrone is currently at work on a literary novel, entitled "Changes," which examines the life of a man who has been struck by lightning and the resulting conflicts that he must resolve within his circle of family and friends.
